Livonia MI Man Arrested After Torching 98 Ford Explorer Because It “Woke Him Up”

LIVONIA, MI. (THECOUNT) — Michigan man, Jonathan Bingham, admitted to police that he set an SUV on fire around 2:30 a.m. because it was “too loud,” and frequently, “woke him up.”

Livonia police say, Bingham, 26, admitted to torching his neighbor’s 1998 Ford Explorer in late May because the vehicle was “extremely noisy,” in its travels in and around the neighborhood.

After being awoken, the owner of the burned vehicle claimed he witnessed a man pouring something on the SUV before setting it ablaze outside his residence.

The owner of the SUV yelled at the man who then fled the scene.

Livonia Police responded to the home, located on Cardwell Street, just north of Plymouth Road on a report of a burning vehicle.

Upon arrival and after interviewing the vehicle owner, police deployed K-9 officers in an attempt to track the suspect down – but were unsuccessful.

That is, until they got a call from a man who was reporting his bicycle stolen.

The caller was identified as Bingham, who police said matched the description of the man who set the SUV on fire. Bingham was shirtless and wearing red basketball shorts when police caught up to him. source

A bicycle belonging to Bingham was later located ditched in some bushes nearby.

Police concluded that Bingham discovered the location of the parked SUV, and then set it on fire, police said in a report.

Police later connected a gas can and a mug located about a block from the incident to the burned vehicle.

The owner of the SUV said he did not know Bingham.

Bingham was arrested for fourth degree arson and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
