Firefighters have identified former University of Akron student, Kevin McCollum, as the man killed in a Grant Street house fire Monday morning.
The Summit County Medical Examiner says, McCollum, 26, died in the early morning blaze at a home he rented along with three others, located at, 675 Grant Street, in Akron, Ohio, just one-half block south of the university.
According to the Akron Fire Department, the fire was first reported at approximately 4:45 a.m. at a large house in the 600 block of Grant Street. The house, which is rented by McCollum and three other college students, is approximately a mile and a half south of the University of Akron campus. sourcesource
Crews arrived to find smoke rising from the big home and fire appearing in a second-floor bedroom.
McCollum’s body was later located deceased in an upstairs bedroom.
Two other people were able to flee the house and were uninjured.
A third resident was away for the weekend.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
