A young Missouri boy is recovering after answering a knock at the front door and witnessing his mother murdered Wednesday evening. Not only did the boy suffer the trauma of losing his mother, he may also be left with permanent hearing damage from the close proximity of the shots, family members told reporters.
The 10-year-old boy’s aunt, Rachel Johnson, says, the young man answered a knock at the front door when a man asked to speak to an adult. The boy summoned his 31-year-old mother, La Shonda Myers, who then appeared and was immediately shot dead by the man. The gun so close to the boy’s head, he is now experiencing severe hearing loss.
“His mama came around the corner, and the next thing you know, he said he seen him just pull out and pow, pow. I don’t understand. I really don’t,” said Mynesha Myers, La Shonda’s sister. Johnson said the gunshots that killed his mom were so loud that the young boy is still having trouble hearing.
After the shooting, the boy frantically called 911 and scurried to an upstairs bedroom as his mother lay dying.
“I had the door locked. I don’t know if he could get there with the door locked,” the boy told The Star. “I am on the phone with the police, looking up under the door to make sure nobody is coming upstairs. I’m sitting there scared…,” the boy said, “I was in there shaking.”
Police said they are searching for the man who did not pursue the boy, but fled the scene following the cold blooded murder.
The boy and his mother were the only ones occupying the dwelling at the time of her murder.
Johnson described La Shonda as a “square” who didn’t really go out much and instead provided for her children:
“I was just at a loss. I felt empty I felt breathless, cause this young lady takes care of her kids. She is not out here in the streets doing anything to make anyone want to do something like this to her, so I just don’t understand,’ said Johnson. “She really didn’t do anything. She was what they call a square. You know she is not out there partying. She goes to work, takes care of her kids.” source
La Shonda graduated from Northeast High School and went into the Job Corps where she studied culinary arts. After that, Myers became a pharmacy tech and worked as a CNA at Myers Nursing and Convalescent Center in Kansas City.
“She was always proud of herself. Loved to take little pictures of her little diplomas, take pictures with her kids with her little cap and gown,” Mynesha said.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends at this difficult time.
