A deputy-involved shooting in Texas has claimed the lives of a female suspect and a 6-year-old boy who was caught in the crossfire Friday.
Kameron Prescott, 6, was killed when deputies opened fire on a woman at a mobile home park following a nearly two-hour manhunt. The woman, who was found to be unarmed, was also killed in the shooting which occurred in Schertz, TX.
During an earlier news conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said authorities were looking for a female suspect in her 30’s in the area of Farm to Market 1518 and Schaefer Road after a vehicle was reported stolen just before 11 a.m.
Salazar said one of the deputies found the suspect in a closet who allegedly told him,”I have a weapon, I’m gonna shoot you.” She fled on foot, while the officer pursued her into a wooden area. Salazar said the deputy lost sight of her, so the deputy called backup. The suspect was found crossing a river and officers pursued her in “water that was up to their chin.” Salazar said she was threatening harm to several witnesses, leading them to believe she was armed. Deputies later found the female suspect on a porch, trying to break into a house. She has several felony warrants in her name, Salazar said. source
Salazar said the deputies fired at and killed the woman at the scene because she placed them “in direct fear of their lives, however, there was no weapon found on the woman or on the scene. “She doesn’t appear to be armed, Salazar said”
Officials are still searching for a weapon.
Authorities say the woman was a wanted felon and car-theft suspect who had tried breaking into a mobile home.
The boy was located inside the home at the time he was struck and killed. Officials did not make clear if the victims were related. Some news reports listed Prescott’s age as 7, not 6 years old. His exact age was not immediately available.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims at this difficult time.
