Wanted SF Cop Shoots Self Dead During Traffic Stop

A San Francisco police officer that had a warrant out for his own arrest, shot and killed himself as police attempted to take him into custody during a traffic stop.

Police officer Antonio Cacatian, a nine-year veteran of the SF police dept., shot himself dead Tuesday afternoon after Richmond police stopped his vehicle over an open warrant out of San Francisco.

At about 1:30 p.m., a Richmond police officer conducted a traffic stop in the Hilltop Mall parking lot near J.C. Penney, spokesman Lt. Felix Tan said. After stopping the vehicle, the officer heard a gunshot and went back to patrol vehicle to ask for help. Tan said officers weren’t sure what happened because the windows of the suspect’s vehicle, a dark-colored sedan, were heavily tinted. Officers used beanbag rounds to break the windows of the vehicle and found the man dead inside. Tan said police and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office each have opened investigations into the death. Police say a firearm has been recovered from the suspect officer’s car. source

The reason for Cacatian’s warrant has not been confirmed.

San Francisco Police Department issued a statement late on Monday and confirmed SFPD were in the city of Richmond today regarding an investigation that involved multiple jurisdictions.
