Police Officer Jaimie Cox has been named as the Rockford, IL., police officer killed during a traffic stop around 1:00 am. The fallen officer was conducting a traffic stop when he may have been shot and dragged several blocks.
Cox stopped a vehicle that may then have attempted to flee the scene. The officer was possibly dragged two blocks before being involved in a single-car crash. Responding officers found Cox on the ground near the crash scene and a suspect dead inside the wrecked vehicle.
Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said it was unclear if Cox succumbed to injuries related to the crash or if he was shot.
Another person was found dead in the vehicle, O’Shea confirmed.
Cox was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead, O’Shea said.
