Witnesses told police a white Chevy impala made a left turn, crossing into the path of the motorcycles.

WAVE 3 News talked to a witness, who said the group of 30 motorcyclists are friends who meet every week at the Speedway on Bardstown Road. In all, two bikes were hit; Cardwell died at the scene and two others were taken to the hospital.

Police said witnesses told them the motorcyclists were traveling at a high rate of speed.

The witness said the Impala did not have a turn signal on when he passed it.

The two others injured were transported to an area hospital and are recovering from surgery.

Police suspect alcohol may have been a factor for the driver of the car. The driver was also taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Charges are expected to be filed in the case.

In July, Cardwell took to Facebook to alert friends that is motorcycle had been stolen. It is not clear whether or not the bike was returned and if that was the same bike he was operating during the crash.

Friends and family shared memories and condolences for Cardwell.
