Pictured is Deputy Keith Liford, one of two deputies shot while attempting to serve a warrant in Knox County, KY. Deputy Claude Hudson was identified as the other deputy shot.
Deputy Liford was shot multiple times and flown to UT Medical Center. He is currently in surgery but is expected to survive. Deputy Hudson was shot in his badge and bulletproof vest and has been released from the hospital.
The person who shot the deputies, John Wesley Bays, was shot and killed at the scene. Court officials tell us dating back to 1999 they show 43 cases involving Bays. All charges involved drugs, theft, and burglary. In March, a grand jury indicted Bays on six counts including burglary and receiving stolen property charges. The cases stem from investigations spanning November and December of 2016. h/t wymt
According to the indictment, investigators believed Bays to be involved in three separate theft and/or burglary cases. During the thefts, he allegedly stole clothes, a television and other items.
Liford made news in 2016 after being involved in an incident where a man hit the deputy and a constable with a vehicle. Knox County deputies said they were performing a welfare check on two men in a parked car, when the driver, Brian Osborne, tried to run them over.
