Matthew Bate, of Australia, was named as the homicide victim in the Friday morning altercation that took place on Van Ness Ave in the city’s Russian Hill neighborhood.
The homicide happened at around 2:15 a.m. Police later identified the victim as Bate, 33, of Australia.

The victim was in a verbal altercation with a group of suspects when it turned violent.
Bate was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Police in San Francisco are investigating.
The man killed was said to be from Woolner, Northern Territory. Woolner is an upper middle class suburb of Darwin.
