Residents of the sleepy North suburban town of Lincolnwood, IL., are reeling over the town’s first murder since 2006 after a 16-year-old girl was charged with the fatal stabbing of Uber driver Grant Nelson early Tuesday.
Nelson, 34, was working as a driver for the ride sharing company when he was brutally stabbed at 3:22 a.m. near the intersection of Touhy and Lincoln avenues, Lincolnwood police said earlier.
The Cook County state attorney’s office has approved a charge of first-degree murder against the girl, whose name was not released by police because of her age, according to Lincolnwood police. Police said the teen was charged as an adult, and will appear in bond court at 1:30 p.m. at the Skokie Courthouse.
Nelson, a Wilmette, IL., resident, was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he later died, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
They found Nelson nearby and determined he had sustained multiple stab wounds. He told police he was an Uber driver and his female passenger had stabbed him.
The teen was located and taken into custody but refused to talk to police.
It was the first homicide in Lincolnwood since 2006, when a murder resulted from an argument between two brothers.
