Here’s an amazing fact about the 10th president of the United States, John Tyler. Turns out the politician born in the late 1700s has today two grandkids that are still living. We’re not talking great-great-great-grandkids, we’re talking grandkids.
Tyler, who was born in 1790, took office in 1841, after William Henry Harrison died. He served as the TENTH President of the United States until 1845 and was also briefly Vice President in 1841. And believe it or not, he has two living grandchildren, and to be clear, these grandchildren are the children of Tyler’s son.
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? Let’s do the math. The Tyler men have a habit of having kids very late in life. Lyon Gardiner Tyler, one of President Tyler’s 15 kids, was born in 1853. He fathered Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. in 1924, and Harrison Ruffin Tyler in 1928. h/t mentalfloss
Harrison Tyler reported in an interview that his older brother Lyon was living in Tennessee and was “not doing good,” but reports say Lyon Tyler, Jr. is “still alive.”
Popular fact-checking website Snopes confirmed that Tyler indeed has living grandchildren, “Two of Tyler’s grandchildren, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr. and Harrison Ruffin Tyler (both born in the 1920s), are still with us today, living grandsons of the 10th President of the United States.”
New York magazine interviewed Harrison in early 2012. Amazing!
