Congresswoman mugged! Rep. Grace Meng (D., N.Y.) was surprised attacked after leaving a restaurant near Capitol Hill. Meng was walking home at about 8:30 Tuesday night when she was clocked on the back of the head and her purse was taken.
Meng was walking to her apartment when a mugger approached her near Pennsylvania Avenue and hit her on the noggin, luckily, her only injury was a bruise on her chin, according to a statement from her office.
“While this was a frightening ordeal, I was fortunately not seriously injured,” Ms. Meng said in a written statement. “Obviously, things could have been much worse.”
The U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made, Capitol Police spokesman Shennell Antrobus said.
Meng represents a district in Queens, and is the first Asian-American representative from New York.
