If this picture is actually of the maligned customers it looks like three fat women are insulted that a waiter identified them as... fat. It is that they're fat, or are we all reacting to society's perception of 'fat' as a pejorative? Why are we surprised? It's more than OK to go after fat folks, it's open game on fat people in our society. People use 'fat' as an insult, not as an adjective. 'Fat' is added to an insult to give it more weight! Fat=bad, fat=lazy, fat=stupid, fat=less than human. And we know it, otherwise these women wouldn't have had the nerve to complain, the manager to 'smirk', and then offer bigger and bigger discounts for their meal. Because they are, indeed, fat. Obese. Zaftig. Plump. Vertically challenged. And just to make this clear: I am fat. Indeed, I'm built very much like one of the three in the picture. I eat a healthy diet (now), do Zumba and yoga each three times a week, work in a helping profession 50+ hours/week and volunteer. I ended up obese through a long-time lousy mix of bad eating habits, emotional food issues, injuries, illness and genes. It wasn't until I made peace with my buddha-shaped body that the scale started to go down. But that's not been my goal; peace of mind and spirit is. Nor do I shy away from the 'fat' label. I am not 'pleasantly plump', I am fat. Its descriptive like my red hair or glasses. And if somebody uses 'fat' as an insult, then I call them on it. If you call me or anyone else 'fat' an insult, then you are an ignorant bigot, a bully, and not someone whose opinion has worth or weight. Words have power, and anybody who uses words to wound should be held accountable.

Okay Dianira, there's no need to be mean, I was just expressing my opinion. To a certain degree, I understand that this could be derogatory and I do see the validity in your statement, but on the other hand, I do think it's a shame how hurt fat people can be by the term "fat".

@ charley obviously your check should say ignorant! It is common courtesy to not go around saying things that hurt people's feeling... If you don't have the common sence to know that these women should have not been ridiculed in the manner that they were, then you have no sensitivity towards others.

To be honest, they're the ones that make the term "fat" so derogatory... If the bill said "Beautiful Girls", they wouldn't have a problem. I believe "Fat" to be a legitimate term for somebody that has excess fat on their body. For a person to take offense from the term fat is just giving power to people who want to hurt them. It's just like the whole drama with black people taking offense from the term "Nigger" when somebody uses it without enough melanin in their skin.
