BALTIMORE, MD. It is a nail-biting medical mystery that has doctors scratching their collective heads… A woman with a never-before-seen condition that is causing fingernails to grow out of her face.
The woman was being treated with steroids for asthma when she suffered an allergic reaction that triggered the unusual growth.
Shanyna Isom, 28, has tiny fingernails growing in patches on her face and head.
Doctors discovered she produces 12 times the number of skin cells per hair follicle, and that suffocates her skin.
“They’ve tested me from A to Z, everything was coming back negative,” Shanyna told reporters. “But everywhere hair grows, nails are growing.”
Shanyna medical bills are already at over a million dollars and her insurance does not cover her rare condition or the numerous medications she needs to take daily to stay healthy.
Friends and family members are hosting fundraisers to help her pay down the debt.
