As you may have seen, actor/comedian/writer/producer Ricky Gervais was the host of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards last night. I was looking forward to watching the Golden Globes last night, just like I do every year. Every actor loves to watch them! I was super interested to watch this time especially because Ricky Gervais was the host, and he promises gut-chuckle laughter every time.
I expected Gervais to amp up the party with his witty British humor and carelessness about others’ feelings, and sure enough, he met my expectations- then exceeded them by far! The commercial which promoted him as the GG host, portrayed him as a cocky bastard, and he was that :)

His opening monologue dissed a lot of stars, and the most memorable dis was on Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for “The Tourist”. Gervais said The Tourist had only been nominated because the voters of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association “accepted bribes”. He discredited the movie in every way that made even the viewers uncomfortable for the stars! Depp and Jolie were there in attendance, and they watched and listened to Gervais’ every word! You could tell Depp and Jolie were embarrassed. He insulted Hollywood’s biggest stars and got away with it for the entire show.
Gervais even went ahead and pushed the gay button and joked about ‘closeted gay Scientologists in Hollywood’. He said, “Also not nominated was ‘I Love You Phillip Morris,’ Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual characters pretending to be gay… So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then.”
When Gervais called Bruce Willis onto the stage, he referred to him as “Ashton Kutcher’s Dad”! Gervais then went all the way with his humor when introducing Robert Downey Jr. to come on stage. He said that Downey was ‘someone better known at the Betty Ford Clinic and the L.A. County jail than for his movie roles’. When Downey came on stage you could tell that Downey wasn’t thrilled and Downey gave off the vibe that Gervais was going to pay for his comments after the show…
Gervais seemed to simmer down on the crackings after Downey put a little fear in him! The other stars pretended to laugh it off when you could tell Jolie was genuinely embarrassed along with the rest of the room. Rumors were going around that Gervais was spoken to backstage by an official to “stop with the insults”, and now the rumors are that Gervais will not be back to host ever again.
His insults- well jokes, had some truth to them, but when people take themselves too seriously, no one likes the messenger- I mean comedian!
