Publishers Weekly reported that, NewSouth Books’ upcoming edition of Mark Twain’s seminal novel “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” will remove all insulting African American words like “N-word”, and will even be removing Native American insults like “Injun”, which is an old word for “Native American”.
The book company doesn’t want kids to learn the insulting terms at such a young age anymore, although the book was written at a time when these racist and bigot terms were said out in the open. They don’t think kids can understand that the terms are from an older time period when the words were ‘normal’, and that Huck Finn is just an old fashioned read. The kids may be confused and use the terms today, which is what the company wants to change starting now in 2011!
Do you think this book should be changed? Does this change what’s inside the time capsule of the old fashioned days of America? I guess we’ll eventually try to forget the racism from the past which I think is kind of beautiful :) What do you think?
