Bozeman, Montana: “If You Want to Work Here, We Need Your Facebook Username and Password”

The Boze-Man

In Bozeman, Montana, they are going ALL THE WAY with Background Checks on their future employees.

Prepare to clean up your Facebook page!…and all your other networking sites like Myspace, etc.

bozemandailychronicle reports:

As part of routine background checks, the city asks job applicants to provide their usernames and passwords for their social-networking sites. And it has been doing it for years, city officials said.

“Please list any and all, current personal or business Web sites, Web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc.,” states a city waiver form applicants are asked to sign. Three lines are provided for applicants to list log-in information for each site.

City officials say the policy is necessary to ensure employees’ integrity and protect the public’s trust.

City Manager Chris Kukulski said the city checks the sites in order to ensure that employees who might be handling taxpayer money, working with children in recreation programs or entering residents’ homes as an emergency services worker are reputable and honest.

“It’s just one of the tools, like all the other tools, that we’ve used to do a thorough background check,” Kukulski said.

The city also checks credit reports, criminal history, references and past employment, among other things.

City officials said they could ask applicants to log into their Facebook page and show it to a city official during the application process, or add the city as a “friend” so the officials could view the applicant’s page.

NO WONDER THERE A FAKE PROFILES AND PEOPLE LEADING DOUBLE LIVES. YOU HAVE TO SHOW YOUR BOSS YOUR FACEBOOK AND MYSPACE AND BE THEIR “FRIEND” ON THERE! YOUR BOSS IS READING YOUR EMAIL!!! TALK ABOUT A FULL-TIME JOB! RUN FAST!

  • Definitely a violation of terms of service practically across the board. However, apparently despite backing off on the requirement for the login information, they're still set on getting the information somehow. At least according to Debralegg.com.

Also, according to Newsy.com, Facebook has reported that it will be getting in touch with the city. When Facebook can tell the government they're out of line, you know they've arrived.

  • Bozeman city officials should be charged criminally for possible violation of federal law, as they are inducing applicants to violate terms of service which forbid users from sharing their logins.

Furthermore, who would hire somebody who had worked for Bozeman, having agreed to ( or worse, required) such egregious violation of one of the most fundamental concepts of IT security -- never, ever share your username and password with anyone.

Perhaps all employers should demand that all former Bozeman employees share all usernames and passwords used under the employ of Bozeman.
