GRIFFITH, IN. (THECOUNT) — Alayna Oritiz has been identified as the Portage High School student shot and killed last week.
Oritiz, 18, was shot in the head near an apartment complex in Griffith on Jan. 9., and police in northwest Indiana are are holding a news conference on the deadly incident Thursday.
Relatives say she and a group of other people were there to drop off a friend.
A Griffith officer working at Park West Apartments heard what sounded like a crash, then saw an SUV speed off, reports wgntv.
Oritiz was a passenger in that vehicle.

BATON ROUGE, LA. (THECOUNT) — Kobe Johnson has been identified as the victim shot and killed during an altercation with a pair of LSU players on Saturday in Baton Rouge, LA.
A pair of LSU football players, later identified as, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and walk-on linebacker Jared Small, shot and killed an 18-year-old Johnson during a street-level electronics transaction gone wrong, according to the students.
The players claim they shot Johnson after he attempted to rob them during the transaction, according to reports.
Johnson was later discovered dead in the back seat of a truck in the 2900 block of 68th Avenue.
Both Edwards-Helaire and Small were also in the truck and reportedly contacted 911 following the shooting. They remained at the scene and cooperated with arriving authorities before being hauled into headquarter for questioning.
Baton Rouge police said two LSU football players, who were identified by sources as running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and walk-on linebacker Jared Small, were trying to sell an electronic item when suspect Kobe Johnson pulled out a weapon and demanded the two players’ belongings. Continue reading
MILL SPRING, NC. (THECOUNT) — Cindy Walker has been identified as the Mill Spring, NC, woman found beaten to death in her residence Wednesday. Her son Jack has since been arrested in what police at calling a homicide.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office officials were called to perform a welfare check at a home after an injured man arrived at a Tennessee hospital telling staff he’d possibly killed his own mother. That man was later identified as Jack Walker.
Police then went to the woman’s Mill Spring residence where she was located dead.
Deputies said they were called out early Wednesday morning to conduct a welfare dress at an address on Highway 9 South. Deputies found the woman dead when they arrived. She wasn’t identified until Wednesday evening as Cindy Walker following an inter-state investigation. Nashville police later identified the man as 27-year-old Jack Walker when they arrested him later on Wednesday. According to North Precinct detectives, Walker showed up to General Hospital with superficial scratches on his hands and told staff he tried to kill his mother, adding on she might be dead. Based on his account and on the discovery of his mother’s Jeep in the hospital parking garage with a bloody shirt in the passenger seat, Metro Nashville Police contacted PCSO and asked deputies to check on Cindy Walker. DAYTON, OH. (THECOUNT) — Ohio woman, LaPeetra Dawson, has been identified as the victim found suffering from at least one gunshot wound in a Dayton, Ohio, residence Tuesday night.
Dawson, 37, was fatally shot at a residence in the 2800 block of Millicent Avenue, in Dayton, Tuesday night, according to authorities.
Police say they are treating the death as a homicide.
An autopsy of Dawson’s body is planned at a later date, according to investigators.
Details surrounding the shooting or possible suspects remain unclear.
La’Peetra Dawson was shot and killed in the 2800 block just before midnight, prompting investigators from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office to respond to the incident, which they confirmed was a homicide. Continue reading
WHITEVILLE, NC. (THECOUNT) — Whiteville, North Carolina woman, Samantha Nicole Ferrari, is now facing murder charges after the elderly man she allegedly attacked, passed away from injuries sustained during the assault.
Ferrari, 27, was taken into custody and initially charged with aggravated assault but those charges were upgraded to murder following the death of 79-year-old Lonzie Lee.
Police responded to Memory Twins Cir, in Whiteville, NC, 10:50 p.m. on Oct. 22 on calls of a domestic disturbance.
Upon arrival, police found Lee on the floor covered in blood.
Lee was airlifted from Columbus Regional to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he eventually succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Continue reading
COLUMBIA, SC. (THECOUNT) — Jerrilynn Sigmon, of West Columbia, has been identified as the woman killed in an early Saturday morning shooting.
Sigmon, 25, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head on Norman Street, in Columbia, Saturday Morning.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner confirmed that autopsy results showed that Sigmon died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

ST PAUL, MN. (THECOUNT) — Eddie Cortez Smith, of St. Paul, MN, has been identified as the man found suffering from at least one gunshot wound Wednesday night.
Smith, 40, was killed in a shooting Wednesday night on the 800 block of Rice Street, in Saint Paul, MN.
Police reported they were called to the scene around 11 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a man shot. At the scene, officers found Cortez with a gunshot wound, as well as two handguns.
The department provided the identification in a tweet Friday. A suspect, Dewayne Anthony Ivory, was arrested in connection to the shooting Thursday. Continue reading
AMSTERDAM (THECOUNT) — The two victims in an overseas stabbing, have been identified as American tourists.
The two people injured in a stabbing incident on Friday at Amsterdam’s central station were U.S. citizens, the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands said in a statement on Saturday, according to reuters.
Ambassador Pete Hoekstra said the pair were tourists visiting the city.
According to Dutch police the attacker, an Afghan citizen, was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Police said the suspect’s motives are not yet known.
The names of the victims has not yet been provided.

NEW YORK, NY. (THECOUNT) — Farris Koroma, a Roosevelt Island resident, was taken in custody following a weeklong manhunt for the person responsible for an Upper East Side high-rise shooting.
Koroma, 22, turned himself in to police Friday, authorities said. He surrendered at a police precinct with an attorney overnight after he allegedly fired shots into a Manhattan luxury apartment on the Upper East Side last week.
Several residents of the posh high rise claimed their apartment windows had been shot out. The involved residences were located on the same side of the building, facing the river. No one was injured in the incident.
The first shooting happened on Aug. 14. when a man on the 14th floor of the high-rise woke up after a gunshot shattered his window. Bullet fragments were found on the living room floor. Two days later, a woman on the 32nd floor of the same building was sleeping when a gunshot shattered her window. Authorities released footage Thursday the moment shots were fired out of Roosevelt Island around the same time a round of shots hit the 32nd floor, hoping to identify persons of interest. DANVILLE, VA. (THECOUNT) — Patrick Andreaus Gunn, of Danville, has been identified by Danville police as the man killed Friday night on Paxton Street, Danville, VA.
“Pat” Gunn, 21, was found suffering from gunshot wounds after police arrived to 700 block of Paxton Street in Danville on Friday evening on calls of shots fired.
