Esteban Santiago was born in New Jersey making his a U.S. citizen. He is also an Iraq War combat veteran. Before he shot 11 people, killing five, at a Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport baggage claim, he pleaded with the FBI for help because he said he was hearing voices in his head that were urging him to fight for ISIS.
Santiago, 26, was on the FBI radar, however, they were unable to stop him from jumping on a flight from Alaska, with the gun in his checked baggage, which he then used to create death and destruction.
