Barbie Heading to the Big Screen

    Movie star!

    Movie star!

Well, it’s only been 50 years!

Barbie, the blond bombshell who has graced toy shelves for decades, is finally becoming a movie star.  Universal Pictures has grabbed the film rights to Barbie and plan on creating a motion picture about her, with Julie & Julia’s Laurence Mark producing.

I wonder what a Barbie film will be like.  Will it be modern Barbie or classic Barbie? Will she be impossibly skinny and fit or realistic?  And, most importantly, what will her job be? Flight attendant, nurse?  The options are endless.

    “Chance of Meatballs” = $$

    Cloudy With A Chance Of M 002 Chance of Meatballs = $$

You know, I was really against the idea of adapting Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs into a movie.  I mean, the book was fantastic but really lacked a plot.  It’s just a simple book about raining food.  At the same time, that’s what was great about it.  When hearing about the animated film and its crazy, convoluted plot, I thought we were surely headed for disaster.

I guess I was alone because both critics and audiences ate up (I couldn’t help it) Cloudy with a Chance of MeatballsThe film raked in an impressive $30.1 million — and this was supposed to be a slow weekend.  The 3D and IMAX showings of the film surely helped the box office but this was a genuine success.

Matt Damon’s new film, The Informant! came in second place with $10.5 million.  Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself came in third with $10 million even.

Sadly, the new Megan Fox/Diablo Cody flick Jennifer’s Body came in at a cold fifth place, earning $6.8 million.  Maybe audiences only flock to Megan Fox when she’s battling giant robots?

Harrison Ford Ready for “Indy 5″

29lik9g Harrison Ford Ready for Indy 5

That sound you hear is 1,000 angels crying as Harrison Ford informs us that Indiana Jones 5 is definitely in the works.

The actor recently told French magazine Le Figaro, “The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form…Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again.”

Interesting that Ford doesn’t confirm if Spielberg’s directing.  Perhaps Steven Spielberg is just producing the next film and moving on to direct other films.  But maybe that’s wishful thinking.

Shia LaBouef also confirmed the existence of another film earlier in the year, telling BBC that “Steven’s just said that he’s cracked the story.”

Did you guys like the last Indy film?  Compared to the previous entries in the franchise, I thought it was sorely lacking.  That being said, I would see Spielberg direct anything. Oh, the life of a loyalist.

    Tyler Perry Does it Again

    The movie master himself

    The movie master himself

Maybe Tyler Perry made a deal with the devil.  You start to wonder how the man does it when all of his movies are huge hits.  Perry pulled off another success this weekend, with his new film I Can Do Bad All by Myself pulling in an estimated $24 million.  The film cleaned up at the box office, proving to the film maker’s seventh consecutive hit film.

Also doing well this weekend was the animated film 9, which brought in $10.9 million.  The film cost about $24 million to make so, combined with its international numbers, it’s close to making its money back. I saw it and was rather impressed by the animation.  The story?  Not so much.

The other new releases, Whiteout and Sorority Row, bombed in their opening weekends.  Sorry Kate Beckinsale.

So what’s next for Tyler Perry?  Why Did I Get Married Too? due this spring.

“The Final Destination” Does it Again

r1wz9i The Final Destination Does it Again

Hey folks, Happy Labor Day!  It was a rather slow weekend at the box office as The Final Destination continued to be number one on the charts.  The 3D horror film raked in an estimated $12.4 million since Friday, besting several newcomers. Not an impressive haul but not bad for a slow weekend.  I think we can safely assume that there will be more Final Destinations in the future.  Also, many more horror films in 3D.

Second place went to All About Steve, the Sandra Bullock film that everyone hated.  It made $11.2 million, which isn’t bad considering some people compared this film to Cancer.

The other new entries, Gamer and Extract, came in at fourth and nine place, respectively.  I love Jason Batemen so it’s a shame to his new film flop.  That said, this won’t hurt him in the long run.

Next week brings us a slew of new films, including Whiteout, Sorority Row and the much-hyped animated film 9.

Disney Purchases Marvel for $4 Billion

o9mh60 Disney Purchases Marvel for $4 Billion

The geek world is abuzz today after news that Disney has purchased Marvel Entertainment, Inc., meaning that Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and many, many more are now more or less owned by Disney.  In a sense.

The news is big but don’t expect to see Spider-Man having a cross-over with Wall-E anytime soon (though that might be kind of cool…).  Disney has said that it doesn’t plan on tinkering with current movies or comics.  What you’ll most likely see is more Marvel merchandising, more Marvel on Disney channels and, in the future, Marvel movies distributed by Disney.  Also, new Marvel characters will be produced by the house built by Mickey.  But still, I doubt they’ll dumb it down.

Marvel has been turning on the hits for years now, most notably Spider-Man.  Perhaps one of the most exciting ideas about this purchase is that Pixar has said it would like to create a few movies based on Marvel characters.  Personally, I think that would be a genius idea.

“The Final Destination” Claims Box Office Throne

k385yo The Final Destination Claims Box Office Throne

The Final Destination was number one at the box office this weekend, bringing in a nice $28.3 million, surpassing expectations.  The film was helped by the extra cost some moviegoers had to pay to see the film in 3D.  Nice move, New Line.

Halloween II came in a little under predictions with $17.4 million, claiming third place.  The film got bad reviews (like The Final Destination) and saw its hype dissipate before its premiere but $17.4 million isn’t bad. In fact, there’s already talk about a third Halloween movie — in 3D! The future is now!

Inglourious Basterds is holding well in second place with $20 million.  The movie is still the talking point for many film conversations these days and it’s only receiving great word-of-mouth.  Tarantino has a hit on his hands.

And the summer movie season is now officially over!

Rob Zombie To Remake/Reimagine “The Blob”

My name is Rob, I like directing remakes.

"My name is Rob, I like directing remakes."

Rob Zombie, the man who did a really, really, really bad job with his Halloween remake (I hear the sequel isn’t much better) is looking to his next project: a remake of The Blob.

Rob is set to write, direct and produce a $30 million, R-rated remake of the 1958 classic.  The original concerned a small town being ravaged by an ever-expanded gooey mass.  The 80’s sequel was also pretty great, though updated with all the grim and grit of an 80’s horror film.  I personally love both versions and the concept of the story.  Rob, not so much.

    ThecounT and Rob Zombie!

    ThecounT and Rob Zombie!

“My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change,” Rob said of the remake. Really?  No big red blobby thing?  So Rob Zombie’s The Blob won’t have a blob in it.  That’s an…interesting angle I suppose.

When it comes down to it, Rob Zombie is a talented film maker but he seems to be hell-bent on doing things his own way.  In my opinion, that didn’t work for Halloween and I fear it won’t work for The Blob.  Why not make another original picture, Rob?  Let the remakes be.

    Megan Fox is NOT Catwoman

    My goodness...

    My goodness...

Can we just discuss this and get it over with?  Rumors are running rampant right now claiming that Megan Fox has been signed and cast as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s next Batman film.  This is a lot of bull.

Firstly, Nolan isn’t even signed to direct a third Batman film yet.  Sure, he probably will but nothing has been inked at this time.  That means that a script hasn’t even been started.  There’s no story, therefore there is no Catwoman.  Therefore…well, you get it.   Also, Megan Fox is a bit too young for Christian Bale.  Being a massive Batman fan (seriously, it’s kind of sad), I can tell you that Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, has to be the approximate age of Bruce Wayne, hence their bizarre on-again/off-again relationship.

Rumors about the third Batman film have been spreading like the plague this year.  Remember when Shia LaBeouf was supposedly signed on to play Robin?  Or how about when Eddie Murphy was cast as The Riddler?  These rumors are just that and there’s nothing to them.  They generate traffic to websites and it’s always fun to fantasy-cast but it’s kind of silly at this point.  We’ve still got some time before any official announcement about the third Bat-film is made.  At that time, let the speculation begin.  For the time being, don’t trust any of it.
