CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Robert S. Gooch IV, of Chesterfield, Virginia, has been identified as the victim in a Tuesday night fatal shooting at a Chesterfield Wawa gas station.

Gooch, 34, was shot and killed Tuesday night about 7:13 p.m. in front of his daughter at 16000 Otterdale, Station Way, in Chesterfield, while standing outside the gas station entrance door, according to reports.

George Thomas Buschmann, 34, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, felony eluding, possession of a firearm after being involuntarily committed, and transporting a firearm while being subject to a protective order.

Henrico, Richmond, Chesterfield, and Virginia State Police were all involved in a pursuit involving Buschmann when it ended at the Wawa and a shooting occurred.

Buschmann and Gooch did not know each other.

After being shot, the victim carried himself inside the store where frightened employees and customers tried to help him.

“All of a sudden we heard a lot of noise and then the window shattered. We heard gunshots,” witness Tracea Bolin said. “It’s the scariest thing ever. I just thank God I’m alive. That’s the main thing, I’m just so thankful because it’s a scary feeling knowing a gunman might be running around.” source

Gooch, a father of three, was an Army Officer who survived several deployments to Afghanistan.

According to Facebook, Gooch and his family attended the White House Easter Egg Roll in 2018:

“That time we hung out at the White House for the 2018 Easter Egg Roll. Amazing! Yes, we rolled down the White House lawn.”

Buschmann was booked at Chesterfield County Jail pending a court appearance.
