CANTON, GA. (THECOUNT) — In what was first being reported as a suicide, the death of Canton woman, Tammy Gilbert, has now been ruled a murder, according to police.

Jasper, Georgia man, Jesse Simmons, 40, was charged Saturday in the death of girlfriend, 55-year-old Gilbert, after initially telling police she died after committing suicide. He is facing a charge of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Simmons reportedly called 911 to tell police his girlfriend had committed suicide inside a Canton home on Saturday. First responders arrived to find a female victim suffering from gunshot injuries.

Gilbert was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

After reviewing evidence, police determined Simmons was lying about Gilbert’s manner of death.

He’s currently housed in the Cherokee Adult Detention Center and held on a no-bond order.
