Maurice Harper has been named as the Sedalia, MO., man found shot dead Sunday morning. Eric Harper, 25, is under arrested in the death.

Maurice Harper, 42, was found lying near his residence with a gunshot wound in his chest with what appeared to be from buck shot, according to the probable cause statement.

Maurice Harper died a short time later. Eric Harper, of Chicago, Illinois, was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

When officers arrived at 314 N. Summit Ave., they heard moaning. They found 42-year-old Maurice Harper.

Sedalia police had responded to the 1200 block of East 4th Street after a person had witnessed a shooting. Officers later learned a man had been admitted to the emergency room at Bothwell Hospital with gunshot wounds. The victim, who had been shot multiple times, said the shooting had occurred at 314 N. Summit Ave. The man was taken to University Hospital where he was expected to recover, according to the probable cause statement. source

As a deputy was headed to the police station for questioning with the man who said he had witnessed the shooting, they saw a male walking near 3rd Street and Montgomery Avenue. The man in the deputy’s vehicle identified the individual as ‘the shooter,’ according to the court document.

Harper admitted to going to the home to purchase drugs. He told investigators he had left the residence before any shots were fired, however, officers found blood on Harper’s jeans.

Harper was booked into the Pettis County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
