“State Police Lt. Elizabeth Armijo confirmed Bennett’s death Thursday, a day after a helicopter carrying him and five others went down in a mountainous rural area of northern New Mexico. Details of why the 60-year-old Bennett was in the area weren’t immediately available. The crash killed five and injured a sixth person aboard,” reported the AP.
The crash reportedly occurred at around 6:00 PM on Wednesday near the Colorado state line. First responders learned of the incident after the lone survivor called 911 for help.
Bennett was known in Zimbabwe as “Pachedu”, a name that meant “one of us” in Shona. He was highly regarded as the biggest obstacle for the current political leader in Zimbabwe and had gathered a large following of supporters. He was a major advocate for political change in the country.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends at this difficult time.
