Zander Venezia, a rising 16 years old surfing pro, was killed while shredding off the east coast of Barbados during Irma. He was surfing in a surf spot known as “Box by Box” which was made more dangerous by the huge waves generated by the powerful hurricane.

Venezia was rushed to the hospital where doctors performed nearly 70 minutes of CPR. Venezia died at the hospital with his family surrounding him.

According to Surfline, Venezia was caught by a closeout set, meaning the water closed in on him from both sides likely hitting against the ocean floor or a shallow reef. Surf instructor Alan Burke told Surfline, They tried to get him to the beach quickly, which was difficult,” Burke said. “Box by Box is a tough place to get in and out of, even if you have the ability. There’s lots of big rocks around, and some stick out of the water.” source

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends at this difficult time.
