Well-known drummer, John Blackwell Jr., passed away on the Fourth of July. He was 43.
Blackwell worked with many well-known artists, including Prince, Justin Timberlake, D’Angelo, Patti LaBelle, The Drifters, and P. Diddy.

According to USA Today, his wife announced the sad news via Instagram, saying “My husband incredible drummer John Blackwell Jr. passed the way peacefully in my company today. Thanks God for his life and thanks everyone for their support. Yaritza.” Along with the heartfelt message, she shared a photo of her holding his hand. USA Today reports he passed away after recently discovering he had two brain tumors. The tumors were removed, but he became paralyzed after the brain surgery.

In 2016, he released a video statement after finding out about his condition, asking for prayers, and giving many thanks to Prince.
