Ah, the 4th of July. A time when we celebrate our country’s birth (or more accurately, the approval of the Declaration of Independence) with fireworks, liquors, bar-be-cue and everything that goes with it all on the boss’ dime.
So what celebrities will celebrate their birthday with fireworks (and other possibly illegal items)? Here is the Movie Dude’s Famous Alive Guy (or Gal) and dead guy of the day.
Very much alive…
Eva Marie Saint – (4 July 1924) – Sexy, talented and dedicated to her craft, Eva Marie can boast being the lead actress in two of the most famous films to hit the big screen, starring opposite Marlon Brando in Elia Kazan’s “On the Waterfront” in 1954 and Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” in 1959. Saint went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress in “On the Waterfront” in1954. Saint went on to conquer the small screen as well, winning an Emmy for her role as Lil Van Degan Altemus in “People Like Us” in 1990.
In addition to currently performing in theater and films, Saint takes time to speak to her fans and a new generation of artists, most recently at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she received an honorary doctorate.
Eva Marie has also been successful in a venture that doesn’t appear on the marquee. Her marriage to director Jeffrey Hayden is one of Hollywood’s longest as the couple will celebrate their 60th anniversary in October.
Gone, but not forgotten…
Nathaniel Hawthorne – (4 July 1804- 19 May 1864) best known for “The Scarlet Letter” (1850) and “The House of the Seven Gables” (1851), Hawthorne is recognized as one of the best fiction writers in American literature. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Nathaniel would later add the ‘w’ to his last name out of shame of being related to John Hathorne, a judge in the infamous Salem Witch Trials.
Writing seemed to be in the Hawthornes blood as his son Julian Hawthorne and grandaughter Hildegarde Hawthorne went on to be writers. He was also credited as an influence to author Herman Melville, who went on to write the classic “Moby Dick”.
So whether you’re trading lines with Brando or wearing a big red A on your clothes, don’t forget to have a happy and safe 4th of July. And while you’re at it, add me on twitter @lamoviedude
