You know, I was really against the idea of adapting Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs into a movie. I mean, the book was fantastic but really lacked a plot. It’s just a simple book about raining food. At the same time, that’s what was great about it. When hearing about the animated film and its crazy, convoluted plot, I thought we were surely headed for disaster.
I guess I was alone because both critics and audiences ate up (I couldn’t help it) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The film raked in an impressive $30.1 million — and this was supposed to be a slow weekend. The 3D and IMAX showings of the film surely helped the box office but this was a genuine success.
Matt Damon’s new film, The Informant! came in second place with $10.5 million. Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself came in third with $10 million even.
Sadly, the new Megan Fox/Diablo Cody flick Jennifer’s Body came in at a cold fifth place, earning $6.8 million. Maybe audiences only flock to Megan Fox when she’s battling giant robots?
